One of my favorite projects is to make a flower crown. They are so ethereal; I’ve been making them since I was very young. One of my favorite things was to make one while walking through a field on a summer’s day- not for photos but just because I am kind of eclectic and have never grown out of dress up. I never used wire, I just wrapped the long stems around each other until they held in place. Unfortunately, winter, or should I say, grocery store flowers are much harder to form into a crown without using a pre-made base. Fortunately, these are very simple to make and require minimal supplies. The best thing is that the the wire base for this easy flower crown is reusable.
I used Amazon affiliate links in the supply list, but you can find them at just about any craft store.
What you need:
- Flowers, of course! Flowers with big heads are easier to use)
- Scissors
- 1/2 inch floral tape
- 18 gauge paper wrapped wire (you can use other wire, but this won’t get caught in your hair as easily)
How to make a flower crown: Step One
Start by taking two pieces of wire and forming them into a complete circle. Twist the ends so that they won’t get caught in your hair. You want the circle to be wide enough to put on your head and slip a few fingers through.
Once your circle is complete, wrap more wire around it in a circular motion. Don’t wrap it too tightly as it will make it more difficult to stick the flowers through.
How to make a flower crown: Step Two
You can bend the wires back enough so that you can stick a flower stem inside.
Once the stem is inside, gently bend the wire to hold it in place.
Be careful bending the wire back in place- if you do it too tightly, you can break the stem. Make sure to leave 2 or 3 inches of stem on each flower.
Keep adding flowers until you are happy with the final result.
How to make a flower crown: Step Three
Now you will have to wrap the stems in floral tape to hold them in place. You could try skipping this step if you are only using the crown for a few photos and plan to be gentle with it.
They key to using floral tape is to gently stretch it while wrapping it around the stems. When you stretch it, it becomes sticky.
If you find that you now have holes in your design from taping the stems, you can easily tape more flowers in place.
You can get extra life out of your crown by storing it in the refrigerator.
Remember that you can save the wire base to use again. I hope you enjoyed this easy flower crown tutorial. If you have any tips that I should add, leave them in the comments!
